He taught vocational agriculture for 35 years, beginning at Crescent High School and post district consolidation at El Campo High School.

D.D. served as a volunteer with the Special Friends Mentorship program for at risk students, The Boys and Girls Club and Boy Scouts of America. He was a lifetime member of the El Campo Masonic Lodge and Future Farmers of America, and a member of First United Methodist Church.

D.D. was the last surviving member of his chapter of the Pearl
Harbor Survivors Association. He was honored as El Campo's Citizen of the Year by the El Campo Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture in 2007.
